jordyn197

As a homeowner in our beautiful Niagara Region, ensuring your home is well-maintained throughout the year is crucial. Quarterly maintenance not only protects your investment but also helps prevent costly repairs and breakdowns. Summer is an excellent time to tackle specific tasks that ensure your home remains safe and efficient. If you have kids, you can even do a lot of this while you’re outside with them for some outdoor play time.

Here’s a summer home maintenance checklist for you to work on this summer. (Be sure to check back this Fall for your next checklist! Or get notified by joining our monthly newsletter here.)

1. Inspect Children’s Backyard Playground Equipment

Safety first! Summer is when your children will be spending a lot of time playing outside. Take the time to inspect their playground equipment for any signs of wear and tear. Look for rust, splinters, and loose bolts or screws. Ensure that swings, slides, and other equipment are securely anchored and free from hazards.

2. Check Wood Deck or Concrete Patio for Deterioration

The warm weather is perfect for outdoor gatherings, so make sure your deck or patio is in top shape. For wood decks, check for signs of rot, warping, or splintering. Sand down rough areas and apply a fresh coat of sealant if needed. If you have a concrete patio, inspect for cracks or surface deterioration. Address any issues promptly to prevent them from worsening.

3. Inspect Water Hoses on Appliances

To avoid unexpected water damage, examine the water hoses on your washing machine, refrigerator, ice maker, and dishwasher. Look for any cracks, bubbles, or other signs of wear. Replace any damaged hoses immediately to prevent leaks and potential flooding.

4. Ensure Stairway Nightlights are Functioning

Nightlights at the top and bottom of stairways enhance safety by illuminating potential trip hazards. Check that all night lights are working correctly. Replace any burnt-out bulbs and consider upgrading to LED nightlights for better energy efficiency.

5. Check All Window and Door Locks

Home security is paramount. Inspect all window and door locks to ensure they are functioning correctly. Repair or replace any faulty locks to keep your home secure. This simple step can significantly deter potential break-ins.

6. Examine Exterior Siding

The exterior siding of your home not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also protects it from the elements. Inspect for any cracks, gaps, or signs of deterioration. Address any issues promptly to maintain your home’s appearance and structural integrity.

7. Practice an Emergency Escape Plan

Summer is an ideal time to review and practice your family’s emergency escape plan. Ensure everyone knows the quickest routes out of the house in case of an emergency. Regular practice can make a significant difference in a real emergency situation, providing peace of mind for you and your family.

The Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs has shared this escape plan template.

By dedicating time to these essential summer maintenance tasks, you can protect your home, ensure your family’s safety, and enjoy a worry-free season. Regular quarterly maintenance helps prevent large-scale repairs and extends the life of your home’s components. Stay proactive and enjoy the beautiful summer months in Southern Ontario with confidence.
